Paints & Finishes

A close cooperation between our manufacturers and the Danish paint manufacturer Dyrup A/S has resulted in the development of paints and stains which are available in a colour.

The treatment is carried out in a Flow Coat facility so the treatment will percolate into all joints and potential weak spots such as end grain.

VCS is a waterbased system and contains no solvents. The system is therefore environmentally friendly and has been successfully installed into the homes of allergen sensitive clients. The treatment also reduces the wood's ability to absorb moisture, allowing dimensions and form stability to be retained.

Vrogum Coat System

Vrogum have developed a 3 stage coat system which retains a beneficial amount of moisture in the wood. The coating system itself is water-based in line with Vrogum's environmental commitments, and includes a clear primer, base coat and final coat available in a range of colours. If used, the Vrogum Coat System also includes coating knots in the wood to prevent knot yellowing.

Units can be supplied at any stage of this three coat system to suit the customer. Please note that the units are normally supplied fully assembled and glazed and therefore it is not possible to give an on-site final treatment within the glazing rebates. A factory finished unit will offer greater long term durability.

1. Untreated Victoria® Oak and Oak

Units can be offered in untreated Victoria® Oak and Oak (subject to unit types) for clients to provide their own finishes. The untreated units should be treated with a good protecting paint or hardwood oil on site, to protect the wood against moisture and UV radiation. It is not recommended that the units are left untreated and exposed to the elements as staining may occur and the long term durability may be affected.

Ecomerchant also offer Livos natural oils for customers to finish the windows and doors themselves giving a natural oiled look. This has proved very popular with ecologically aware customers. We recommend the Livos Adao 624 as an exterior primer with Kaldet Oak 281-076 as the exterior oil finish. Internally we recommend Dubno 261 as an interior primer and Kaldet 270-076 as the finish. See Livos Natural Paints

2. Clear Primer Only

The factory primer treatment ensures that any fungal spores are prevented from growing. The treatment is colourless and effective, but only offers basic treatment of the wood. The units still require priming and a final treatment with any waterbased UV-protecting stain.

3. Grey/White Primer

The units are treated with a clear primer as stage (2). A grey/white base priming coat is applied to each item, covering all ends, joints and any potential weak points. At the same time an inhibitive primer is also applied to minimise discolouring around knots and resin seepage. This treatment gives a good base for any final paint finish.

4. Final Surface Treatment with factory finished colours

The units are primed and prepared as (2) and (3), then filled and lightly sanded to prepare for a top coat of water based paint. Final treatment provides a minimum coat thickness of 120 microns. The result is an effective paint or stain system with long term durability.
