New Courses Announced for 2016

3 NEW COURSES FOR Spring 2016

We have 3 new exciting courses for Spring 2016, all to be held at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre. Provided and led by recognised experts in their field these courses are designed to give direct access to their expertise and experience to help you avoid costly mistakes, learn about different ways of building and to give you options or techniques you might not otherwise have considered. Each course is designed to be educational, interactive and practical.  The courses are all half day events which means you will always have time to enjoy the exhibitors trade stands and educational features at the Centre.  The courses are designed to be interactive and promote discussion and participation in an informal but structured way.

Course Title: What Price Building Control? SOLD OUT

Course Leader: Paul Kalbskopf MRICS, Senior Building Control Surveyor Wiltshire County Council. (LABC)

Wiltshire Council’s own Building Control expert, Paul will happily take you through the Building Control regulations, helping you understand exactly what it is expected, how to build up a relationship with your local inspector, and what to do if things go wrong. Spending some time with Paul at this event will help you get things right first time, saving you time, money and heartache!

 Course Synopsis:

Paul will explain the why’s and how’s of all things Building Control, drawing on years of experience Paul will work through the key elements in gaining Building Control approval. He will explain the role of the Officer through the planning and construction phases of a building project, covering everything from a small housing extension through to larger properties and refurbishment. Explaining how they:

  • Liaise with architects, designers, builders and engineers on planning proposals
  • Suggest ways to improve the cost-effectiveness of materials and energy use
  • Carry out regular inspections at each stage of the build process
  • Maintain records and issue completion certificates

For all construction projects a working knowledge of the Building Control approval mechanism is vital to ensure compliance  where failure could result in work having to be demolished. This course will equip you to make all the key decisions and help you plan a route to a successful and compliant completion.

Course Title: How to think and build green

Sandy

Sandy is a practicing architect, journalist and speaker. He is the founding editor of GreenSpec a site dedicated to delivering information about the design and building of Green Buildings

Course Synopsis:

The course objective is to explain and demonstrate the methodology, design, reasoning and delivery of durable, healthy buildings.  Focusing on a fabric first approach Sandy will debunk and make simple the core principles needed to deliver on any sustainable project

The first part of the course covers a basic introduction into building physics and how it influences good building design the section covers the technical and scientific background to how to build healthy homes. Sandy uses simple understandable language that cuts through jargon and sales speak to get right to the core of what matters.

The second part of the course is a practical run through on how to apply the principles of design to deliver exceptional building health and durability on the same budget as a traditional build.

Martin has 25 years’ experience within the Construction industry having worked for an Architectural practice, a national material supply company and now a manufacturer of low impact materials. With a degree in Environmental Sciences he has a keen interest in Sustainable and Natural building processes and his background gives him a unique understanding of the requirements within this competitive and growing sector.

Course Synopsis:

The course objective is to explain and demonstrate the methodology, design reasoning and installation of timber based roof solutions.

The first part of the course will cover a basic introduction into why using wood products in roof construction provides benefits not achieved in other ways and covers the technical and scientific background to how it works.

The second part of the course is a practical run through on building with wood and wood fibre over a range of roofing applications including refurbishment and new build.

This short course is intensive, but the atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable which creates a good learning environment. Each course ends with an ‘Open Surgery’  so if you have a particular project in mind, or some building plans you wish to gain advice on, please bring them along will be more than happy to discuss these with you your questions during this lively end to the course.
