Installation instructions for Warmcel 100 insulation

Warmcel is non-toxic and non-irritant to eyes and skin. However, it does cause a small amount of dust when pouring, therefore we recommend you were a dust mask.

Before you start laying Warmcel: -

  1. Make sure you have a sturdy pair of steps or ladder to get into your loft
  2. Arrange for adequate lighting in your loft - a torch is insufficient
  3. When in the loft make sure that you do not tread between the roof joists, otherwise you could not just damage yourself, but also your ceiling. Try to get a crawling board into the loft to span the joists.
  4. Make sure the loft is as clear as possible
  5. If you have any pipes going through the ceiling to the room below, fill any gaps with stiff card or mastic
  6. Put guards around the flue pipe or recessed light fittings to keep Warmcel approximately 150mm away from any hot component. Either build a wooden box with an open top round each light or cut a length of 150mm PVC to go over each light.
  7. Check the ceiling from the room below. Fill any cracks or holes to stop condensation from the room escaping into the loft, which can inadversely affect the insulation.

Basic installation of insulation good practice: -

  1. Make sure that you do not cover any ventilation grills/holes in the eaves of the roof. Cut hardboard to fit between roof timbers to eaves to stop Warmcel blocking ventilation to roof, or use internal roof ventilators
  2. if you have any electrical cables in the loft, these should be within a conduit or installed above the Warmcel. High amperage rated cables (shower and cooker cables) must be kept away from any insulation materials.
  3. If you have a cold water tank sitting on the joists, then do not insulate under the tank so that the residual heat from the house stops the water from freezing
  4. If possible, lay the insulation over the joists as this reduces the heat loss further
  5. With all the insulation in the loft ready for use, close the loft door! This will stop any dust or Warmcel escaping into your house
  6. Start laying the insulation in the far corners from the loft hatch, making sure that you get all into all the difficult corners
  7. Once you have laid your insulation, do not forget the loft hatch and cold water tank. Fill a polythene bag with Warmcel and staple it to the hatch or lay on top of the water tank so that any heat that comes up from the house is retained in the tank.
