The Sedum Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile Explained:

The Sedum Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile

Vegetation: Consists of a mix of 8-12 varieties of Sedum. Sedums are low growing evergreen plants that look after themselves in the main.

Soil: The media mix used is a special substrate prepared specifically for the Rigid Roof Tile.

Carrier: Made from recycled HDPE plastic, the carrier performs the following roles – a water reservoir, drainage layer, protection from excessive drying of roots from the airspace below, the cups greatly improve product handing making it easier to install.

Installation: The Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile is equipped with a simple double-action coupling system: the tabs on the side of each part engage with gaps between tabs of the facing part.

The Brown (pre-seeded) Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile Explained

Ecomerchant Brown Pre Sown Rigid Roof TileThe lowest cost Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile option. Your Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile will be supplied with wildflower seeds pre-germinated depending on the season. In spring and summer your brown wildflower roof will burst into colour with flowers blooming.  Local plant seeds may also blow onto the roof adding diversity.  In autumn and winter the plants will die down leaving 60mm of 100% recycled growing media.

All green roof systems MUST be installed on a waterproof deck.

The Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile kit can be laid on any waterproof surface.

Ecomerchant recommend EPDM* as both waterproofing and root barrier to cover the roof surface. Due to the dry weight of the roof tile exceeding 40Kg's/m2 the roof is described as 'ballasted' which means that the membrane can be loose laid without the need for a complete adhesive bond underneath. The membrane will need contact adhesive** to bond to the perimeter edges (or up-stands)  once the membrane is in place cover with the protective fleece and simply lay the pre planted trays directly onto the fleece without gaps. Trays can easily be cut to size.

A margin of 250mm of coarse gravel can be left if required.

FAQ's

Q. Can I cut an Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile to fit my roof?

A. In short: Yes.  The modules can be cut down with a hand saw or grinder; the cut edge then needs to be faced into the rest of the green roof so that it’s supported by the next module.

Q. Do you need Edge guard with every green roof?

A. Unless there is a parapet or upstand we would recommend that you use our edge guard.  It will make the finished roof look neater and protect the edge.  The 100mm height of our edge guard means it covers the Ecomerchant Rigid Green Roof Tile but the plants can be seen above.

Q. Do green roofs need to have a stone border?

A. If you’re planning a green roof, you might have noticed that they often incorporate a stone (or gravel) border.  You might well wonder why this is, or whether it is essential to a green roof build up.

There are a number of reasons to consider including stone areas on a green roof, some of these are:

  • Access, as plants such as Sedum are not intended to support frequent foot traffic it would be a good idea to consider stone paths if frequent access is required for maintenance or leisure
  • Aesthetic, some roof designs use stone areas to create artistic patterns or even a simple border might add character in some situations
  • Fire break, the FLL Guidelines and the GRO Green Roof Code include requirements for the provision of fire breaks within green roof design
  • Wind resistance, in particularly blustery areas a stone border can be used to prevent the chance of wind uplift pressures on the green roof
  • Prevent debris, a stone border can effectively stop wind-borne plant parts and debris reaching the edge of the roof and gutters
  • Meet regulations, some councils stipulate the inclusion of stone areas for a number of reasons (usually to act as a fire-break)

So while not all green roofs require stone areas it is often a wise consideration based on the reasoning above.

If you are looking to include stone in your green roof we have some quality Scottish pebbles for this purpose, and for roofs needing a stone border where there is no parapet or upstand, you might consider using an edge guard too.

Benefits

Longer lasting flat roofs

Most flat roof waterproof membranes will come with a guarantee for a number of years, however this is limited due to the membrane breaking down from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, acidic rain, puddling and freeze thaw weathering where water that sits in puddles on the roof freezes and expand breaking down the roof membrane. By installing a green roof these weaknesses are mitigated, the plants absorb the sun’s rays and use them to grow rather than letting them break down the waterproofing beneath. Green roofs also absorb up to 75% of rain water, this significantly reduces the problems caused by both acid rain and puddles forming and freezing on the waterproofing surface.  Green roofs can increase the life of the waterproof membrane saving money on repairs, replacement and making the whole roof a more sustainable investment.

Gives nature a home

With the prevalence of concrete, steel and glass in cities, nature is confined to small pockets of green space.  Vast areas of roof space are left bare.  By adding green roofs and wildflower roofs in cities we can massively increase the habitats available to birds, bees, butterflies and insects.  Specific plant mixes can be planted to bring local plants back to the environment and other features such as log piles, rocks, bird baths, insect hotels and bee hives can be included to boost the ecological impact of the green roof.

  • Planted to attract wildlife – our experts plan a bio-diverse green roof which will attract particular wildlife species
  • A complex eco habitat – the combination of grasses, sedums, wildflowers and other planting creates a specific and sustainable environment
  • Features for wildlife – Bee-hives, bird baths, insect hotels and log/stone outcrops can also be added
  • Year-round interest – the ecologically planned planting is also designed to have visual impact in all seasons
  • Modular design – makes maintenance, moving sections or replacement easy
  • Positive impact – provides valuable extra habitat for urban wildlife

Regulates a buildings temperature naturally

Insulation is an important consideration for buildings of all types, and regulating temperatures can be achieved in a number of ways. Green roofs are a great way of using nature to regulate a buildings temperature, keeping buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Flat roofs can absorb a lot of heat on a hot day and add to the burden on a buildings air conditioning.  As our green roof modules retain rainwater they have a cooling effect and the plants absorb the sun’s rays keeping the building cooler. In winter the plants also keep the building warmer preventing snow and ice from building up on the waterproof membrane.
