UK needs to cut emissions by 60% by 2030

Targets have been set today for the UK to cut emissions by 60% compared with the levels of 1990 within the next 20 years.

'The Influential Committee on Climate Change' today released its report 'The Fourth Carbon Budget - Reducing emissions through the 2020s' in which the committee suggests plans to reduce emission by 2030.

Previously most government plans have targeted at reducing emissions to 1990 levels, before 2050. The committees suggestions as part of the carbon budegets of 2023-27, would therefore half this target.

They have also suggested that this target can be met with a cost of less than 1% GDP (Gross Domestic Product) over the twenty year period.

"The case for action on climate change is as strong as ever: climate science remains robust and suggests that there are very significant risks if we do not cut emissions. And countries acting now will gain economic benefits in an increasingly carbon constrained world." Lord Adair Turner of the Committee on Climate Change.
